Spirulina is known as the protein queen and belongs to a class of single-celled, blue-green spiral algae. The green colour is derived from chlorophyll and the blue colour is from the pigment phycocyanin.
Spirulina is an algae superfood that consists of 65-71 percent protein which is the highest concentration of protein found in any food. It is classed as a complete protein source and is an abundant natural source of chlorophyll, salts, phytonutrients, and enzymes.
When looking to buy spirulina choose certified organic and make sure it has a “fresh” smell. Avoid the brands that use tableting agents, which help to keep it from crumbling. It should naturally cling to itself.
It can be added to juices, smoothies, water, salad dressings, desserts, dips, and even sprinkled on salads.
